«حلقه بازخوردی بسته» ساختار اصلی سازنده سیستم است و نشان می‌دهد که چگونه عملکرد سیستم بر شکل گیری رفتار آینده سیستم اثر می‌گذارد.
فکر سیستمی بر روابط علت و معلولی و اینکه رفتار سیستم واقعا چگونه شکل می گیرد تمرکز دارد.
فکر غیر سیستمی به دنبال فهرست کردن عوامل موثر بر رفتار سیستم است.
تفکر سیستمی یک پارادایم فکری است که جهان را به صورت سیستم‌هایی به هم پیوسته و در هم تنیده می‌بیند و به شناخت و تصمیم‌گیری بهتر در مورد مسایلی که با آنها مواجه هستیم، کمک می‌کند.
متغیرهای «نرخ» یا «جریان» در یک سیستم نشان‌دهنده تصمیم‌ها و اقدام‌هایی هستند که در طی زمان انجام می‌شوند و با تغییر متغیرهای حالت، رفتار سیستم را شکل می‌دهند.
